BRIEF HISTORY OF BEADS
The word 'Bead' comes from an old English word "Biddan" which means to pray. Many years ago beads were used as an object for integral part of worship. In west Africa, glass beads have been a long tradition in many villages and a legacy families.
The colours and patterns or designs were inspired by those of the Venetians trade beads of the 19th century. Now Beads are highly valued in Ghana and plays a very important role in our society today. They form part of festivals and traditional life. They are also valued because of the historical background, and also respected as a family heirloom.
Beads portray who you are (status) and also communicate to the traditional society. Beads are bought for different reasons and can also help preserving the culture of a people. Beads are in vogue not only as fashion accessories but also objects that can transform cultures and ideas. |
